Lure Division riffs into the New Year
With a new single imminent, Lure Division talks Current Joys, performing, and more
Lure Division is an alternative/indie band based in South Texas. The Lure Division feel can best be encapsulated as sentiments of yearning and implacable melancholia. Their sonic signature can be felt throughout their discography via reverbing guitars and crooning vocals. We got a chance to chat with 22-year-old Jorge Garza to learn more about Lure Division's origin and see what is in store as we all meander our way through this world.
What’s been your music journey? What got you to start Lure Division?
I started Lure Division almost 3 years ago during a time I felt I was going through a lot of changes in my life. I moved from place to place being 20 and I couldn't seem to feel grounded or stable. I started writing songs, which were acoustic. I still have not ever released them and I probably won't, but they were very meaningful to me as I wrote about the changes I was going through. I didn't come up with a name for my music until I first came up with "Color Vision." I called myself that until I guess I gave it some thought. I came up with Lure Division with an explanation for it. In this game, life, you are constantly being lured to multiple phases and changes in your life. A division of challenges and highs and it never ends. Well, I guess that's where it came from. The name might not make much sense at first sight. But at the end of the day is there really a band or artist whose name makes sense? So I stuck with it.
Who have been some of your musical influences?
Influences, I was really big on Beach Fossils at the time, and still kinda am. I listen to a lot of Diiv, Goodmorning, and of course, Current Joys. I take a lot of inspiration from Current Joys if you couldn't tell. I love the simple 1-2-1-1 type of beat. And the reverbed guitars are repetitive but sweet. I won't lie, I discovered Current Joys only in late 2018 or early 2019. So I can't say I am a day one fan, but Nick Rattigan's early music did nothing less but inspired me to really just take my creation to higher levels. Although it's very obvious I'm heavily inspired by him, I hope that there's at least some originality to the ears of someone who is barely discovering me. I display messages of youth, hurt, forgiveness, and joy.
What would be the best way to describe lure division to a friend?
The best way I feel a listener can best describe my music is just a feeling. I try to let my music flow in a way where you just feel it more for how it sounds than for what I am saying. I want listeners to associate my music with valuable memories of theirs, not just " vibes "
I want there to be a deep connection between the listener and my music, just as how I feel with Current Joys and his earlier music.
What’s on the horizon?
For the future, I do plan on touring, I am pushing to tour the west coast this summer. It's not a big guarantee, but it's in the works. Definitely playing more live shows this coming year in Texas. I have been reaching out to many venues in Texas and I'm ready to take my live performances to the next level. Also going to be releasing a lot more video content, live performances, in particular, bedroom sessions, and outdoor sessions. I want to have a lot more for people to see than just my Spotify. And as for music, I do have an EP in the works, but probably going to release a couple of singles before. This one will be special, quite a bit more meaningful to me than my latest album, Omnimovie, was. It's going to be special, and I'm almost ready to show people the best I can come up with.
Closing Thoughts?
Nothing much to add after that, only that I love each and every one of my supporters, and It's very meaningful to see everyone sharing their thoughts on my work. My biggest regret is not pursuing my dream earlier, but everything happens for a reason, right? I want to urge people to really drop their reasoning for not doing what they love. Trust your hobbies, You can take your passion anywhere if you love it enough. That is one thing I have always said and always will. Love your hobbies, if you love them enough they will become your career. Anything can happen and you'll never get there if you never do it.
